Sick Baby

So Loryn has been very sick lately. A few weeks ago, Loryn got strep throat, before she was done with her antibiotics, she started running a fever again. When the fever went away and she was just congested with a small cough, we assumed it was a cold. When her cough got worse, we took her to the doctors. They diagnosed her with an ear infection (This was last Thursday). The fever was gone by Saturday. On Tuesday, when I picked her up from her baby sitter's she was running 104.4. We were able to lower the temperature to 102, and she went to sleep. About 2 hours later, she was up and the fever was back on the rise. By the time we saw the doctor her temp was 104.5. We were told that the bacteria must be resistant to the antibiotics she was put on. She received an antibiotic shot and then we were given a script for Augmenton. Wednesday night, Loryn's fever again goes up to 103.5. Keep in mind, that this entire time since Tuesday, her fever hasn't dropped below 102.

This morning we called a friend's dad (Dr. Kagan) who not only has been on the phone with me since Tuesday night, but called me back 5 minutes after I had him paged. He made room in his schedule for Loryn to be seen at 10:30am this morning. Spent a ton of time talking to Eric and sitting with him while Loryn was there for about 2 hours. Dr. Kagen diagnosed Loryn not only with an ear infection, which at this point is so bad that her ear started to bleed while she was at his office, but also with a severe sinus infection. Why the other doctor's that she saw in her Pediatric practice couldn't diagnose her, I have no idea. Loryn had to have a second shot of antibiotics, her ears cleaned out, put on a new antibiotic that is for adults (We have to smash up the pills and mix in food for her) and another script that is to help with the diarrhea and yeast infection that may come about from the strength of the antibiotic. Tomorrow Loryn goes in for her sinus x-ray. Dr. Kagan wants to double check her sinuses to see if she has to have sinus surgery. Monday Loryn goes to see the ENT about her ears and we will be bringing the sinus x-ray and report as well.

Eric and I would LOVE for Dr. Kagan to be Loryn's pediatrician. The downside is that his office is 40 minutes away from our house. Not only has Dr. Kagan taken my calls when we needed a second opinion, but he has always followed up with us the next day to see how Loryn was feeling. He took the time to discuss different medical studies being done and went over options with Eric on what needed to be done for Loryn to start feeling better. Tonight, Dr. Kagan called us to see how Loryn was doing and to discuss how we can try to get her temperature down, since it is still higher than he would like it to be. He has told us to call him if we have any questions tonight (anytime) and to have him paged in the morning when Loryn wakes up so that he can see how she is doing. He has requested Loryn's lab results get to him STAT, so that way he can let us know as soon as possible how her sinuses are, so that we can be prepared with the reports for her ENT visit on Monday.
